About Us

Over a century of adventure, community and character-building in Brighton, Victoria.

A legacy of adventure

1st/14th Brighton Sea Scouts has been a cornerstone of the Brighton community since 1908 — making us one of the longest-running Scout Groups in Victoria. Over more than a century, thousands of young people have passed through our doors, gained confidence, learned real-world skills, and formed lifelong friendships.

We are proudly part of Scouts Australia, the world's largest youth organisation, and operate under the guidance of Scouts Victoria within the Bayside District. Our "Sea Scouts" heritage means we have always had a special connection to the water — sailing, kayaking, power boating and environmental stewardship on Port Phillip Bay are central to what we do.

Today we serve around 100+ young people aged 5 to 25 across five active sections, supported by a dedicated team of adult volunteers and a committed parent committee.

What makes us different

  • Sea Scouts heritage — sailing and water skills are in our DNA
  • 🌿 Environmental leadership — our Reef Project makes a real difference
  • 🤝 Inclusive community — all genders, all abilities, no prior experience needed
  • 🏆 Youth-led program — young people drive their own adventures
  • 📍 Central Brighton location — our hall at 34 Wilson Street

Scouting is for everyone. We welcome young people of all backgrounds, abilities, and identities.

Bayside District

1st/14th Brighton Sea Scouts is part of the Bayside District of Scouts Victoria — a network of Scout Groups across the inner-south Melbourne suburbs. Being part of the district means our members can participate in district-wide events including:

  • The District Billy Cart Derby (Cubs)
  • Gilweroo — the regional Scout camping event
  • Joint water activities and sailing regattas
  • District Cuboree events
  • Leadership training courses

The district provides additional resources, training for leaders, and helps coordinate major events that individual Groups couldn't run alone.

Parent Committee

Our Group is supported by an active Parent Committee, which plays a vital role in the Group's operation and sustainability.

About the Committee

  • Members are appointed on a 12-month term
  • Meets monthly to plan and review Group activities
  • Manages Group finances, fundraising and facilities
  • Organises family and community events
  • Supports leaders with logistics and resources

All families are expected to participate in fundraising activities to help keep fees affordable and programs running.

Volunteer with us

Scouting runs on volunteers. Whether you have a relevant skill, a few hours a week, or just enthusiasm — there is a role for you. Our adult leaders come from all walks of life and bring skills ranging from sailing and construction to cooking and environmental science.

✅ Requirements for adult volunteers

  • Working With Children Check (WWC) — required for all adults
  • National Police Check — required for all adults
  • Scouts Victoria induction and training
  • First aid certification (training provided)

Leader training is fully supported by Scouts Victoria and includes a comprehensive program covering youth development, outdoor skills, risk management and more. You don't need to have been a Scout yourself to become a leader.

Contact the Group Leader to find out about current volunteering opportunities.
