Joey Scouts

Ages 5–8
📅 Tuesdays 6:30–7:30pm
👥 ~30 Joeys

The youngest members of our Scouting family, the Joey Scout Mob gives children aged 5–8 a safe, fun and exciting introduction to Scouting. In their "mob", Joeys discover the world around them through play, creativity, and simple outdoor adventures.

  • Mob format — a supportive, nurturing group environment for young children
  • Focus on discovering the natural world, sharing, and caring
  • Activities include nature walks, craft, simple cooking, games and songs
  • First steps in the Scouting journey — lays the foundation for Cubs and beyond

  • 🌙 Sleepover at the Hall — a first-ever overnight adventure in a familiar, safe environment
  • 🦉 Possum and Owl Spotting at Lennox Park — exploring local wildlife at night
  • 🪨 Ricketts Point Rock Pools — hands-on marine science and discovery
  • 🦘 Kangaree — the statewide Joey overnight sleepover event, held every 2 years, bringing thousands of Joeys together from across Victoria

Peak Award

Joeys work towards the Promise Challenge — the highest award in the Joey Scout section, recognising achievement across a range of activities.

Cub Scouts

Ages 8–11
📅 Wednesdays 7:00–8:30pm
👥 ~70 Cubs

With around 70 active members, our Cub Scout Pack is one of the largest and most active in the region. Cubs aged 8–11 experience a rich, varied program that builds confidence, teamwork and a lifelong love of the outdoors — all while having a lot of fun.

About the Program

  • Pack format — a vibrant group structure with strong team spirit
  • Adventure skills: canoeing, navigation, knots and outdoor cooking
  • STEM challenges: catapult building, construction, problem-solving
  • Community service, environmental awareness, cultural activities
  • Regular camps — Cubs camp at least once per year

Annual Highlights

  • 🍳 Master Chef Night — our popular annual cooking competition. Teams design, cook and present a full meal
  • 🛒 District Billy Cart Derby — Cubs design and race billy carts against other Packs in the Bayside District
  • 💧 Water Activity Nights — regular water-based fun at local aquatic facilities
  • 🏕️ Annual Camp — a multi-day camp where Cubs put their outdoor skills into practice
  • 🌏 Cuboree — held every 3 years at Gilwell Park, Gembrook, this epic 5-day event brings thousands of Cubs together from across Victoria for the ultimate Cub adventure

Cubs work through a structured progression towards the Grey Wolf — the highest award in the Cub Scout section.

Scouts

Ages 11–15
📅 Thursdays 7:00–9:00pm

The Scout Troop is where the real adventure begins. Scouts aged 11–15 operate in the iconic patrol system — small teams led by a Patrol Leader, planning and running their own activities with increasing independence. This is where leadership, self-reliance and genuine outdoor skills are forged.

About the Program

  • Patrol system — youth-led patrols with elected Patrol Leaders
  • Progressive badge pathway: Pioneer → Explorer → Adventurer
  • Outdoor Adventure Skills: navigation, campcraft, cooking, first aid
  • Sailing courses on Port Phillip Bay — our Sea Scout heritage in action
  • Canoeing on local waterways
  • Geocaching, orienteering and navigation challenges
  • Community service projects and leadership development

Major Events

  • 🏕️ Gilweroo — our annual regional Scout camping and skills competition in November
  • 🌏 AJ2025 — Australian Jamboree — the national Scout Jamboree in Maryborough, Queensland, bringing together thousands of Scouts from across Australia and the world
  • ⛵ Regular sailing and water activity days on Port Phillip Bay
  • 🧭 Patrol overnight hikes and navigation challenges

Peak Award

The highest achievement in the Scout section is the Scout Medallion — a nationally recognised award representing excellence across all areas of the Scout program.

Venturers

Ages 15–18
📅 Fridays 7:30–9:30pm

The Venturer Unit is a self-led group for young people aged 15–18. Venturers plan, organise and lead their own adventures and projects — with adult advisers available for support and safety, not direction. There is no prior Scouting experience required to join.

About the Program

  • Self-directed — Venturers set their own program and elect their own leadership
  • Environmental leadership: Reef Environment Project at Holloway Bend, monitoring Port Phillip Bay's reef ecosystem
  • Achievement Pathways: Special Interest Areas, community projects, outdoor skills
  • No prior Scouting experience needed — welcome any time from age 15

Activities

  • ⛵ Sailing on Port Phillip Bay
  • 🚤 Power boating certification
  • 🛶 Kayaking and sea kayaking
  • 🚵 Mountain bike riding
  • 🧗 Caving expeditions
  • ⛷️ Skiing — including Falls Creek trips

The Queen's Scout Award

The highest award in Venturers is the prestigious Queen's Scout Award — one of Australia's most recognised youth achievement awards. It is acknowledged for entry by several Australian universities as a mark of exceptional character and achievement.

🪸 Reef Environment Project

Our Venturer Unit leads ongoing environmental monitoring at Holloway Bend on Port Phillip Bay — studying the reef ecosystem, tracking microplastic pollution, and contributing to Commonwealth-funded marine research. Real science, with real impact.

Surrey Thomas
Rover Crew

Ages 18–25
📅 Mondays 7:30pm+

The Surrey Thomas Rover Crew is our adult youth section for those aged 18–25. Rovers are entirely self-run — the Crew elects its own Crew Leader and plans all of its own activities. There is no prior Scouting experience required to join.

About Rovers

  • Fully self-run crew — democratic, youth-led organisation
  • Elected Crew Leader manages the group's activities and direction
  • Open to anyone aged 18–25, with or without prior Scouting experience
  • Social, adventurous and community-focused — a great social group for young adults

Annual Events

  • 🌊 Surf Camp at Anglesea — annual surfing camp on the Great Ocean Road
  • 🥾 Easter Hiking Trip — multi-day hiking adventure over the Easter long weekend
  • 🌧️ Mud Bash — an annual outdoor adventure involving significantly more mud than most people consider reasonable
  • 🎉 Annual Ball — the Rover Crew's formal annual celebration and social event
  • ⛷️ Falls Creek Ski Chalet — annual ski trip at our group's chalet at Falls Creek
  • 🌏 National Rover Moot — held every 3 years, bringing Rover Crews together from across Australia

Peak Award

The highest award available to Rovers is the Baden-Powell Award — named after Scouting's founder, Robert Baden-Powell, this award recognises outstanding achievement across community service, personal development and adventure.
